I'm very fond of OSE, and the Classic Game Set is one of my best RPG investments. I like it even more than I do the advanced set, and I like the advanced set a lot.
It's really hard to get a five-star review of anything from me, but this one is close. Lemme put my four-star rating into context.
As far as content goes, I would have liked to have seen d6 thief skills, and the gnome and half-orc class, as part of the base game. I can get that from supplemental material (like the zine and Advanced Fantasy book), but having everything I need in just the one set would have been great.
As far as a physical product goes, I'm torn. The books and box themselves are beautiful and well made -- durable, with great art. The quality is top-notch. But part of me wishes the books were softcover instead of hardcover, for ease of use. A book one can open and lay it on its spine is really good for referencing information.
But overall, I'm super happy with the OSE Classic Game Set. The writing is succinct and clear, everything is organized and laid out well, and the presentation is great. A standard around which RPGs should be written -- I'm certainly using it as a model for anything I write going forward.
I'm strongly considering buying a second set, just to have one.
I am in the process of moving, so I have not had time to give these an in-depth read or bring them to the table. I am greatly looking forward to both.
I will update the review after the move.
OSE products are amazing! NNo bloat, just super simple rules, well organized, in a tiny package that you can take anywhere
Exactly as described. Good choice of DHL shipping to Canada, duties and brokerage fees were reasonable. Thanks for not using UPS.
If you loved boxed sets this is for you!
