I haven't played the game yet. Have been reading the books and am impressed with what I see. I've only had time to read most of the Core Rulebook so far. I am a big fan of the "tiered" approach to creatures. I also really like the mechanics of each class having their own benefits which aren't SPELLS rather ABILITIES. Coming from DnD and Shadowdark, I see this loosely parallels the Shadowdark "luck tokens" that are used per-session. Or the "burn a luck" mechanic of DCC. The difference being that Eem Abilities are class-based, so it isn't simply a "cash in the luck token" mechanic! Combat mechanics should be very enjoyable, and present more role play and interaction instead of simple "roll for combat" episodes. For combat, the system feels organic and I think it will be easy to pick up... because "OF COURSE" one would realistically choose a Parley first for most encounters (except of course Ambushes)!
If there is anything I can call out as a challenge would be that all the abilities etc. aren't in any "table" format I could find, so a GM would have to page through the book to validate any abilities. This may not be an issue if players properly update their character sheet, but I can see this page-flipping mid-game being a headache. Would be nice to have some table-based supplement for at-a-glance consultations.
Another suggestion I would offer would be to have a "template" of sorts for building adventures. Flipping through the Mucklands adventure book, I both love and hate that many of the grids have only one-page descriptions of that area's lore. Perhaps I haven't read that far yet...
Lore-wise, I'm changing corporations into guilds, etc. That's the only thing I am going to "home brew"... the lore opens up a great world to explore! I do love the notion that this COULD be a far-future post-apocalyptic world, since humans have forgotten most of their history! That gives me a great "Dying Earth" vibe.
As a final endorsement, I have also signed up for the Underdark expansion. So "yes" I recommend!
I was extremely happy with the books. They arrived with some damage that i assume happened in shipping. Overall happy with the product.
Outstanding value and one of the best RPG products I've played in a long time!
Fantastic
Great looking system, really great art and atmosphere, very happy with my purchase. Publisher was very understanding when there were missing meeples.
