Land of Eem has become our family's go-to role playing game. Both my kids (age 9 and 12) are into it, and my 9-year-old daughter regularly acts as our game master. The ruleset is not simplified so we end of doing a lot of improvising when she is the GM, but it's a total blast. The illustrations are wonderful, and the whimsy of the different folk is great for all ages. Highly recommended.
I bought Land of Eem for my family (okay⊠mostly for me đ), and I was completely blown away by the quality and care poured into this game. From the moment you open the box, itâs clear this is something special.
The books are stunningâgorgeous, vibrant color, thick high-quality pages, beautiful stitch binding, and they lay perfectly flat on the table. Itâs a joy just to handle them. The game map is equally impressive: a sturdy, high-quality foldable board that honestly puts most modern board games to shame.
Every component feels premium, thoughtful, and made to last. Beyond the physical quality, the game is packed with an incredible amount of usable content. Itâs beautiful from start to finish and brimming with imagination and adventure.
Iâm beyond excited to run my six kids through grand adventures in the Land of Eem. This is the kind of game that sparks creativity, brings everyone to the table, and feels like a true labor of love. If youâre even remotely interested, this is an easy recommendationâan absolute home run.
This was for my sonâs birthday and he was THRILLED â havenât seen him this excited about a gift in many years!
I haven't played the game yet. Have been reading the books and am impressed with what I see. I've only had time to read most of the Core Rulebook so far. I am a big fan of the "tiered" approach to creatures. I also really like the mechanics of each class having their own benefits which aren't SPELLS rather ABILITIES. Coming from DnD and Shadowdark, I see this loosely parallels the Shadowdark "luck tokens" that are used per-session. Or the "burn a luck" mechanic of DCC. The difference being that Eem Abilities are class-based, so it isn't simply a "cash in the luck token" mechanic! Combat mechanics should be very enjoyable, and present more role play and interaction instead of simple "roll for combat" episodes. For combat, the system feels organic and I think it will be easy to pick up... because "OF COURSE" one would realistically choose a Parley first for most encounters (except of course Ambushes)!
If there is anything I can call out as a challenge would be that all the abilities etc. aren't in any "table" format I could find, so a GM would have to page through the book to validate any abilities. This may not be an issue if players properly update their character sheet, but I can see this page-flipping mid-game being a headache. Would be nice to have some table-based supplement for at-a-glance consultations.
Another suggestion I would offer would be to have a "template" of sorts for building adventures. Flipping through the Mucklands adventure book, I both love and hate that many of the grids have only one-page descriptions of that area's lore. Perhaps I haven't read that far yet...
Lore-wise, I'm changing corporations into guilds, etc. That's the only thing I am going to "home brew"... the lore opens up a great world to explore! I do love the notion that this COULD be a far-future post-apocalyptic world, since humans have forgotten most of their history! That gives me a great "Dying Earth" vibe.
As a final endorsement, I have also signed up for the Underdark expansion. So "yes" I recommend!
I was extremely happy with the books. They arrived with some damage that i assume happened in shipping. Overall happy with the product.
