At first glance, having barf bags might seem - frankly - pretty damn weird. However, everything at Planet X is done with the Grindhouse style in mind and barf bags are a long standing, tried and true tradition in the low-budget horror scene. The idea was first utilized as a gimmick by the great b-movie director (and self-styled "King of the Gimmick") William Castle, which some of you out there might know from such b-grade schlock asThe TinglerorHouse on Haunted Hill. Basically, the idea was to hint that a movie was so gory or disgusting it would cause patrons to lose their dinner and that they were gonna need a barf bag just in case. So delightfully cheesy... so over the top... so grindhouse!
With that in mind, we extended the barf bag gimmick as the mutant hillbilly cannibal folk of Howling Crater are themselves the product of so many hours of me watching that very same low-budget horror that William Castle made so infamous.
